The Western Cape Education Department has condemned an attack on a learner allegedly by a peer outside the premises of a Cape Town School.
A video surfaced on social media this week showing a group of pupils allegedly from Ned Doman High School in
Athlone gathered around a 15-year-old female learner while she was being assaulted.
The child can be seen lying in the road protecting her head while being kicked by several children.
The victim and her bullies were all dressed in school uniform at the time the video was taken.
Police have confirmed an assault case has been opened at the Athlone police station.
Spokesperson for the Education MEC Jessica Shelver said: “The school principal is aware and concerned by the violent nature of the video allegedly involving learners from his school.
"The incident did not take place on school premises and, therefore, the school needs to rely on evidence and witnesses to come forward to inform the school of who was involved so that they may deal with the matter in terms of their code of conduct.”
