The Western Cape branch of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has stated it will back Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s presidential run.
COSATU’s provincial leaders declared this on Wednesday night during a meeting where they reiterated calls for President Zuma to either step down or be sacked.
This declaration comes as Ramaphosa tries to get back from some negative press surrounding his personal life which has been labelled as pure fabrication intended to delegitimise his presidential hopes.
Cosatu's Tony Ehrenreich says they need to restore the ANC.
“We need to bring our organisations back to basics, restore the alliance and implement the Freedom Charter as a matter of urgency. A central part of this strategy is to make sure that comrade Cyril Ramaphosa becomes the president of the ANC and the president of the country.”
The trade union federation will lead a nationwide one-day strike later this month against state capture and corruption.
