Residents of Ocean View have entered the third day of protest action to voice their dissatisfaction with ongoing gang violence which has crippled the area.
Community members have blocked several main roads accusing police of not effectively dealing with the problem which has claimed the lives of numerous innocent people.
One resident, who participated in the demonstrations, says they're fed up with innocent people being killed in the ongoing gun battles between rival gangs over drug turf.
“We’ve got no one to turn to and when we go to the police all they say is ‘we need you to help us’. In the past when people revealed who the people are, there were quite a few witnesses who died and so you’re not sure what to do. Most police officers know where these guys live.”
“The police and political leaders have done very little for the people of Ocean View,” another resident added.
Burnt tyres, singing and the discharging of rubber bullets have set the tone for the protest which has shown little signs of slowing down.
Residents are quick to explain their anger.
“It’s now on a weekly basis that somebody dies and Ocean View is fed up.”
“I was stopped at gunpoint and have been robbed three times.”
A community activist said there have been 20 murders in Ocean View this year alone.
