Hundreds of people have gathered in Cape Town city centre to demand better policing in Philippi.
The area made national headlines this week after a mass shooting in the Marikana informal settlement on Friday.
Since then, specialised units have been deployed in a police blitz that's yielded 45 arrests.
Members of the public, Marikana residents and the Social Justice Coalition are demanding proper policing, street lights and a dedicated police van for the area.
“What SAPS should be doing is take experienced police from places such as Constantia and Sea Point and distribute them to places such as Marikana, Nyanga and Khayelitsha. Not send new recruits who themselves are going to be in danger because they are not experienced.”
The march will now continue to the office of the MEC for Safety in the Western Cape.
