In a weekend crime blitz, more than 170 people were arrested for rape in Philippi East and Nyanga.
In Philippi, specialised units are patrolling the area.
At least one suspect was taken in for murder and dozens more were apprehended for drug-related offences, assault and car hijacking.
The police's ministry's Vuyo Mhaga has praised law enforcement officials.
“You have about 177 people accused of rape who were found. These initiatives are ongoing to ensure our people feel safe in their communities.”
South Africa has one of the highest incidences of rape. According to Africa Check’s 2014 statistics, 563,841 sexual offences occurred in South Africa, while only 62,649 were reported. At least 8,174 cases went to court and 5,484 cases resulted in a conviction.
