The gunmen behind the shooting at Cape Town International Airport yesterday morning, are still at large.
At least 20 shots were fired yesterday morning just past 5am near the departures section of the airport, in what witnesses believe was an intended hit on notorious gang leader Jerome “Donkie” Booysen.
Provincial Community Safety MEC Dan Plato said: “The impact of the incident is felt across South Africa but also across the world because tourists come from across the world to visit South Africa. This negativity around crime, specifically at a key point like the airport, we cannot tolerate that.”
Police are still investigating the matter and have neither confirmed or denied that the incident is gang-related.
However, witnesses and statements by the Airports Company South Africa suggest exactly that.
Bullets hit Booysen in the chest and abdomen, he was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle and underwent emergency surgery.
A family member reported that he's slowly recovering following the surgery.
This attack follows a wave of armed and organised crime which has hit the OR Tambo Airport pushing the question of why our international transport hubs are such easy targets.
