JOHANNESBURG – Tributes are continuing to pour for Health Department spokesperson Joe Maila following his death on Thursday.
News of his death first circulated on social media yesterday with people expressing their shock and sadness.
Gauteng police say Maila died at a Silverton Gun Range following an alleged freak accident.
The police’s Lungelo Dlamini says a case has been opened and an investigation to establish the events that led to Maila’s death is underway.
“Police have opened an inquest docket after it was established that he allegedly shot himself. The matter is under investigation.”
The Communication Department’s Phumla Williams says Maila was a seasoned communicator and that his death is a loss.
“Minister of Communication Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has, on behalf of the government and government communication in general, expressed her deepest condolences to the family.”
The health ministry has appealed for privacy for the family.
It says details of his memorial and funeral will be made available soon.
