Motorists have been warned to avoid the R24 and R21 highways near OR Tambo International Airport on Friday morning as a protest is underway.
Details surrounding the demonstration are still sketchy but Ekurhuleni Metro Police say that meter taxis are involved.
The metro police's Kobedi Mokheseng says that motorists must avoid the area.
“Working together with the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies, we’re on site trying to calm the situation because Uber and metered taxi drivers they just parked their vehicles in the middle of the freeway and abandoned them.”
OR Tambo’s Leigh Gunkel-Keuler says that it appears that the aim of the protest is to block the entrance to the airport.
“We have been informed that it is a specific intention of the protesting drivers to block access to OR Tambo International Airport. At this stage, the EMPD and the SAPS are on high alert in and around the airport precinct.”
There are now reports of truck drivers lying on the highway.
Tow trucks have now been sent in to remove cars which are barricading the affected roads.
