More than 10 protesters have now been arrested on the R21 and R24 highway near the OR Tambo International Airport.
It’s not yet clear what their demonstration is about but police have confirmed meter taxi drivers are involved.
Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says: “We’ll be analysing and charge them, but I can give the numbers once those people have been processed.”
Officers are also negotiating with other protesters to clear the road.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s Kobeli Mokheseng says: “We have deployed our tow-trucks and we’re getting assistance from Sanral and other stakeholders as well. We’re trying to clean our freeways.”
Earlier, OR Tambo Airport's Leigh Gunkel-Keuler says that it appeared that the aim of the protest was to block the entrance to the airport.
“We have been informed that it is a specific intention of the protesting drivers to block access to OR Tambo International Airport. At this stage, the EMPD and the SAPS are on high alert in and around the airport precinct.”
Tow trucks have now been sent in to remove cars which are barricading the affected roads.
