Damage to homes in the Helderberg wildfire will run into the tens of millions.
There’s a long way to go for the people who lost their homes and livelihoods in the Gordon's Bay Fire.
“The machines are gone, the music school was inside her as well, we lost keyboards and drums,” says Gautier Bakala after watching as the fire engulfed his place of work and caused a gas canister to explode.
His boss and the owner of the property Mary-Ann Shearer says that she’s worried about her 22 employees, two of whom lost their homes on the property.
“We don’t expect this kind of devastation when we think of an insurance; you don’t expect anything like this. It’s completely devastating.”
Four other homes were either damaged or destroyed in this fire.
Fierce winds and hot conditions on Wednesday made firefighting efforts even more difficult in Gordon’s Bay.
