Three men were arrested for house robbery in Hillbrow, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said the men aged between 24 and 30 years — armed with knives — allegedly stole three cellphones at Vannin Court flat on the corner of Quartz and Peterson streets on Saturday.

"The suspects allegedly knocked at the flat. When the occupant opened the door, they produced knives and demanded money. When they did not get it, they stole three cellphones," said Mavundla.

Police were alerted and arrested the suspects at the block of flats.

In another incident, a 28-year-old taxi driver was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm on Friday night on the corner of Jorisson and De Korte streets, Braamfontein.

Police had received a tip off about a taxi driver carrying a suspicious firearm, said Mavundla.

Police found a 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition in the driver’s possession.

"He claimed that he bought the pistol from a friend in Diepsloot. He was arrested after he failed to produce a firearm licence," said Mavundla.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
