Blue Bulls rugby player John Mametsa appeared in the Hatfield Community Court on Monday on charges of assault and defeating the ends of justice.

Chief prosecutor of Gauteng North, Matric Luphondo, said the matter was adjourned until 5 December for further investigation.

"We are confident that very clear independent evidence that we are looking for might be in our possession by the end of next week," he said.

It has been reported that Mametsa was arrested on Friday night after he allegedly assaulted a police officer at the scene of fellow player Fudge Mbeta's car accident.

It is believed that Mbeta bumped into a provincial traffic police vehicle after trying to drive past it outside a Hatfield restaurant.

Mametsa, who was in the restaurant at the time, noticed his team-mate and went to help.

However, he then allegedly got into an argument with the officers which resulted in him apparently being punched and then knocking his head.

In a statement, the Blue Bulls said Mametsa would, after appearing briefly in the court, focus all his attention on Saturday's Absa Currie Cup Final against the Sharks in Durban.

This was after his legal team requested that the case must be postponed.

The team said it had been a very traumatic experience for Mametsa, but he had put it behind him in the short-term to concentrate on the final.

Mametsa would not comment on the matter as it could harm his case.

He was granted bail of R500.
