Over 300 people gathered at the Sandton Convention Centre on Tuesday to celebrate the 90th birthday of ANC stalwart Albertina Sisulu.

Guests wearing formal attire sat inside the ballroom and listened to prominent radio presenter Sam Cowan as she formally opened the event.

Deputy chairperson of Standard Bank Saki Macozoma said Sisulu played a leading role during the liberation struggle against apartheid, describing her as a "self made woman".

He appreciated the role she had played and the life she had lived.

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre, an independent foundation which delivers services to underprivileged children suffering from cardiac ailments, is hosting the event.
