The ANC has " strongly condemned " its former chairperson Terror Lekota's supporters for disrespecting ANC president Jacob Zuma by tearing down his posters in Orange Farm, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

Lekota held a meeting with his supporters in Orange Farm outside Johannesburg on Thursday.

ANC spokesperson Nkenke Kekana said Lekota's supporters' behaviour was provocative.

"Tearing down Jacob Zuma's posters is provocative and it can raise temperatures unnecessarily," Kekana said.

Kekana said the ANC however could not take any action as Lekota's group had not yet been launched as a political party.

"It is difficult to complain to the Independent Electoral Commission. The sooner they launch a party the better.

"Then they will be bound by IEC rules and code of conduct," he said.

Kekana said the ANC was merely appealing for tolerance and was not concerned about the activities of the group.
