Ageing struggle veteran and member of Parliament Andrew Mlangeni (83), was hijacked near Carletonville on the West Rand, North West police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Koos Degenaar said the hijacking happened around 8pm on Monday night.

Mlangeni was on his way from Soweto to Carletonville on the R501.

He was just outside Carletonville when the driver of a white vehicle forced him to pull off the road.

One of the four men inside the white car got out, approached Mlangeni and identified himself as a police officer. The man did not have a police uniform on.

The man then forced Mlangeni into the white vehicle and drove behind with Mlangeni's Mercedes Benz.

Inside the car Mlangeni saw that one of the men was armed.

The robbers drove Mlangeni to Kloof Road near Fochville where they left him and took the Mercedes Benz he was driving in.

Mlangeni was not injured during the incident.

Mlangeni walked into Fochville and opened a case of hijacking at the police station.

The case had been transferred to Carletonville for further investigation, Degenaar said.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson Nkenke Kekana said the party was concerned by the hijacking and condemned the incident.

Kekana called on residents of Carletonville and the surrounding areas to help police to arrest the culprits.
