The ANC will act against members who disrupt meetings of any political parties, its spokesperson Jessie Duarte said on Wednesday.

"No ANC member should go to any political party meeting and try and disrupt them," she told a debate with other political parties in Sandton, Johannesburg.

This was in response to a demand by former ANC chairperson Terror Lekota that there be no further disruptions by ANC members at the SA National Convention's meetings.

"Action will be taken against them," Duarte said.

Disruptions by ANC members at some of the convention's meetings have sparked concerns about freedom of political association in South Africa. Tension has been mounting between Lekota and the party he was suspended from, after 31 years of membership, for saying it was moving away from its principles.

At the same time, Duarte said, "it would help" if there was less of an attack on the ANC.

When pressed for some insight into the party's policies Lekota called for patience and said these would come out of the convention, set to take place in Sandton this weekend.
