A comprehensive report detailing what might have caused the caving in of part of Oxford Road on Tuesday morning will be made available early next week, the Johannesburg Roads Agency said.

"The Geo technical experts went to the site this morning with engineers from JRA, Johannesburg Water and Mbombela for inspections and conduct various tests," said JRA spokesperson Conel Mackay.

He said the 3m hole that occurred when the road caved in on the northbound lane of Oxford Road between Riviera Road and 8th Avenue was being repaired.

It was not known how long it would take for the road to be repaired and traffic continues to be diverted to 8th Avenue, Main Road and Riviera Road.

"We will have a better idea once we get the report next week," Mackay said.

Bombela became aware of the hole around 7.30am on Tuesday after a blue Nissan van belonging to one of the Bombela workers fell into it, Bombela spokesperson Kelebogile Machaka said at the time.

A similar incident occurred in July and according to metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, it took eight weeks to repair that hole.
