Mayor of the Sedibeng Municipality south of Johannesburg, Mlungisi Hlongwane, has resigned from the ANC, the SABC reported on Sunday.

His decision came after threats, intimidation and harassment since the ANC's Polokwane conference in December last year.

"Because I believe my conscience is clear that I now want to get into a home whose principles, whose conscience, whose morality is what motivated me to join the ANC more than 29 years ago. And for that reason I feel extremely happy now that I will be expressing myself and participating in the manner that I needed to," he told the broadcaster.
