Four African National Congress ward councillors resigned from their posts in Cape Town on Monday, the party said.

Provincial secretary Sipho Kroma said the ANC Western Cape, mandated by the Provincial Working Committee, met a number of ward councillors on Monday.

The party had assessed the "current political environment" and was motivated by information that certain councillors had been "using ANC infrastructure to mobilise for another political party".

The party then asked ward councillors Wandile Nkwele, Mzwandile Matiwane and Boyisile Mafilika as well as proportional councillor Kululwa Mpongo to resign as "we no longer have confidence in their ability to represent the ANC".

The four agreed to resign as councillors but have not resigned as party members, Kroma said.

"We will continue to take decisive action against any ANC public representative who misuse the resources of the ANC and we are prepared and ready to fight and win these by-elections," he concluded.
