An armed robber was sentenced on Friday to 13 years behind bars for attempting to kill a 50-year-old man, Pretoria police said.
Police spokesperson Daniel Mavimbela said Danny Koos Nkhumise (21), appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court, where he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for attempted robbery, five years for attempted murder and a further three years for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Nkhumise and two accomplices attacked two men and an 83-year-old woman in February this year. The two men were delivering goods to the woman's premises when Nkhumise and his accomplices arrived at the scene. "The court heard how one of the attackers held down the screaming woman to the ground while the accused [Nkhumise] pointed a handgun at the 50-year-old men who had alighted from the delivery truck," said Mavimbela. The robbers were demanding money when Nkhumise fired a shot, wounding one of the delivery men in the upper body. They robbers ran. "The neighbours and passers-by gave chase and managed to catch the accused and handed him to the Atteridgeville police." The injured man was taken to hospital and later released. Mavimbela said the other two suspects were still at large. Anyone with information to their whereabouts can contact Superintendent Mogotsi on 082-850-7988 or 0800-11-12-13.
