The M1 south highway at the Booysens off-ramp was closed and traffic backed-up while a crane worked on a construction site on Sunday evening, Johannesburg metro police said.
Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said motorists both from M1 south past Smit street as well as from the M2 west were advised to use the Selby road off-ramp to travel along Booysens and avoid the congestion.
The highway had been closed for road works on Sunday but was meant to have been re-opened to traffic at 5pm.
However, the crane was still working and traffic was backed-up on the M1 south before Booysens and up to the M2 west.
It was unknown when the highway would be re-opened, Minnaar said.
