The number of people killed during a rain storm in Botshabelo in the Free State has risen to seven, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Inspector Msisitheli Selima said hundreds of houses in Botshabelo and neighbouring Thaba Nchu were damaged when heavy rains, hail and strong winds hit the area on Sunday afternoon.

Many informal dwellings were also destroyed.

Reports were also received of a huge number of livestock which had perished in the storm.

Mangaung local municipality spokesman Qondile Khedama said a full report on the extent of the disaster would be ready later on Tuesday.

Many residents have taken refuse in community halls in Botshabelo on Monday night after their dwellings were destroyed.

The municipality supplied blankets and mattresses.
