The National Working Committee of the ANC will disband the Amathole regional executive council in the Eastern Cape, the organisation said on Wednesday.

"The decision was taken to dissolve the regional executive committee due to organisational problems. We are in the process of executing that decision," said ANC spokesperson Carl Niehaus.

Niehaus said the NWC took the decision to disband the council after visiting the province to assess its readiness for the 2009 general election.

The Amathole region was chaired by Mluleki George who is now the national organiser of the breakaway group, the Congress of the People.

"We are trying to correct organisational problems identified in that region and will therefore convene a regional general conference to elect new leadership soon," said Niehaus.
