Three robbers blew up an automated teller machine at Fleurdal, in the Free State, on Monday morning, police said.

Inspector Harry Nagel said the three men, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and two handguns, held up security guards in the early hours of the morning.

They packed the ATM with explosives and blew it up, but failed to get their hands on any cash.

The men sped off and nobody was injured.
