The Toyota Condor involved in a crash that killed five people on the Johannesburg M1 at the weekend, was a stolen vehicle, police said on Monday.

Inspector Moses Maphakela said the driver now faces five charges of culpable homicide and counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and theft of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"The car was reported stolen at Alexandra," said Maphakela, who was waiting for the docket to find out when it was reported stolen.

The Condor was travelling in the wrong direction on the M1 north on Sunday when it was involved in a head-on collision. Five people died on the scene and five more were injured. A third car was damaged in the accident.
