Power in Johannesburg's city centre is yet to be fully restored following an underground fire in a cable tunnel earlier this week, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

"At this stage we have restored 80 percent of power," said city power spokesperson Louis Pieterse.

Several robots south of President and Market streets were still off as a result of the power failure, he added.

The fire in the underground cable tunnel started in the early hours of Monday morning.

Pieterse has said the possibility of attempted cable theft could not be excluded.

It would take several days to have all the damaged cables replaced, he said.
