Eighty-six people were issued with fines for crossing the solid white line on the Rivonia off-ramp from the N1 highway on Tuesday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the operation by metro officers followed numerous complaints received by police.

Metro director of operations David Thembe warned that motorists who continued to disregard solid white lines would be arrested and charged with reckless or negligent driving.

Motorists who crossed solid white lines posed a threat to themselves and to other motorists.

Minnaar called on the public to report spots where motorists disregarded road traffic markings and other traffic rules to jmpdoperations@joburg.org.za or fax to 011-758-9185.

Metro police had identified 40 hotspots in the Johannesburg area which they would monitor for traffic violations.
