The steeple of the Dutch Reformed Church at Swellendam on the Cape south coast has collapsed onto the church roof during a restoration attempt, the SABC reported.

Eyewitnesses said the cable of an airforce aircraft used to move the steeple snapped, causing it to fall.

No serious injuries were reported.
