A man was shot dead on Friday minutes after he and his accomplices blew up an automatic teller machine in Mabopane, Pretoria police said.

Four men blew up an ATM machine inside a supermarket store at Itsoseng around 11.00am.

After the man was shot, the other three robbers managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money, Captain Lucas Sithole said.

"He was shot by the shop owner outside the shop while they were escaping. His accomplices managed to flee in a red VW Golf," said Sithole.

The Golf and a firearm were recovered two kilometres away from the scene.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.
