Four people were killed, 50 injured and over 400 people left
homeless after a storm ripped through Amanzimtoti, south of Durban on
Saturday night, the local government department said.
"The storm hit Amanzimtoti, Kwa-Makhuta and Umbumbulu, and the
police confirmed four people dead," said department spokesman Lennox
Mabasa on Sunday.
"About 50 people with serious injuries were taken to Prince Mshiyeni
hospital and over 400 were left homeless," he said.
Social development MEC Meshack Radebe told the SABC that the victims
were a six-year-old child, an eight-month-old baby, their mother and a
26-year-old neighbour. They were killed when their home collapsed on
them.
Disaster management teams were in affected areas to help residents
and mop up.
Said Mabasa: "The department together with other eThekwini
departments are on site to provide blankets and food to the people
affected by the storm."
