At least one Ajax Cape Town supporter was killed, and several others were injured, when a bus filled with travelling Ajax supporters and a bakkie collided head-on near Knysna on Monday morning.

The supporters were on their way to Cape Town from Durban where Ajax were playing Free State Stars in the Telkom Knockout semifinal, which Ajax won 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokesperson at the scene of the accident said: "Members of the SAPS were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that was travelling on the wrong side of the road. As a result the stolen bakkie collided head-on with a bus carrying supporters of Ajax Cape Town."

Reports from the accident scene confirmed that the bus veered off the road and fell into a ditch. There were four fatalities, with one being that of an Ajax Cape Town supporter.

"We would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased. Our prayers are with you at this time of your bereavement," said Ajax CEO George Comitis.

He added: "This supporter has been one of the most loyal Ajax supporters since our inception, never missing a home game and travelling to our away games where possible.

"We will endeavour to bring home the Telkom Knockout for our beloved Ajax supporter."

Other injured Ajax supporters were taken to Knysna Hospital where they received treatment for their wounds and were later discharged.

One supporter, Mark Kulp is still in hospital with broken ribs. The bus company booked the remaining supporters in at the Knysna Lodge to refresh and regroup while awaiting a replacement bus.

Meanwhile, condolences and words of support have poured in at the Ajax CT offices. Amongst those who sent condolences were the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the SAPS and the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
