Four people died and eight are in a critical condition after two vehicles collided on Monday on the N1 highway in Limpopo, police said.

Captain James Sadiki said a bakkie collided head-on with a VW Beetle, on the road to Louis Trichardt.

"According to eyewitnesses... the bakkie tried to avoid objects that were on the road, when it hit the sedan head-on. Four passengers from the bakkie died on the spot."

Sadike said the bakkie was carrying 10 people and the sedan had two occupants.

Eight people were taken to nearby hospitals in a critical condition.
