A 6-year-old girl drowned at Sacred Heart College in Observatory, said Johannesburg emergency services on Tuesday.

"The girl was floating in the water while a group of children were playing in the pool under teacher supervision," said spokesperson Percy Morokane.

On arrival, paramedics tried advanced life support but sadly the girl was dead.

Counselling would be provided, depending on the emotional state of the children, teachers and emergency services staff.

Morokane appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their children and also learn how to swim in case of an emergency.

This incident brought to nine the number of drowning incidents around Johannesburg involving children under the age of five in the past 12 days.
