A veritable who's who of South African society packed Soweto's Regina Mundi church on Thursday to remember anti-apartheid activist Doctor Nthato Motlana.
Motlana died from prostate cancer on Sunday. Leading the dignitaries was former president Nelson Mandela who arrived with his arm around the shoulder of his wife Graça Machel. The crowd erupted into song and stood as Mandela and his wife embraced members of the grieving Motlana family. Also in pride of place in the front row of the church were former president Thabo Mbeki and his wife Zanele, who arrived flanking Sally Motlana. Also among the mourners were Amina Cachalia, George Bizos, and Tokyo Sexwale. "You can say everybody was here," said a mourner. Other mourners included Pearl Luthuli, granddaughter of Chief Albert Luthuli, Soweto Mayor Amos Masondo, Gauteng Premier Paul Mashatile, Justice Edward Cameron and singer Sipho "Hotsticks" Mabuza. Born on 16 February 1925, Motlana will be buried on Saturday, 6 December. The funeral service will be held at the Wits Great Hall from 9am.
