A 16-year-old Vereeniging schoolboy died on Friday morning after being hit by a bus, said Netcare 911 paramedics.

Spokesperson Nick Dollman said the accident happened just before 8am on the Old Johannesburg Road, close to the Voortrekker Road intersection in the Vereeniging area.

He said the boy, dressed in a school uniform, sustained serious head and abdominal injuries.

A Netcare 911 helicopter was brought in but the boy's condition was too unstable and critical form him to be airlifted. Life-saving procedures, including CPR and putting him on a ventilator, were performed on the boy for about 45 minutes.

"His injuries were severe and he died at the scene," said Dollman.

Police would investigate the accident.
