Provincial and Local Government Minister Sicelo Shiceka encouraged municipalities on Saturday to change apartheid-era structural names, the SABC reported on Saturday.

Shiceko was speaking at a ceremony to mark the renaming of the Northern Cape's Kgalagadi District Municipality after trade unionist John Taolo Gaetsewe.

"Now for us we think that these things [renamings] must happen across the country because the names that we have are names that were imposed on us by the colonialists," Shiceka told the SABC.

"Therefore for us to bring back dignity to our people, I think it is a process that must be encouraged, that must be happening all over the country," he said.
