A 27-year-old police Constable was gunned down during a shootout with alleged robbers in Khayelitsha on Sunday evening, Western Cape police said.

Senior Superintendent Billy Jones said the shot Constable was among officers dispatched to the Score supermarket in Khayelitsha's Harare section following a robbery report.

"Three armed men allegedly robbed the supermarket staff of R6000 cash and a cellular phone. As the police members arrived at the scene, the alleged robbers came out of the shop and a shootout ensued," Jones said.

It was during this crossfire that the Constable was shot dead while his partner, a reservist Constable was seriously injured.

"He is in a serious but stable condition in a nearby hospital. He was shot on the left upper leg," Jones said.

One of the alleged robbers was also killed in the crossfire, while his two accomplices fled the scene on foot.

No arrests have been made and police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
