Two pensioners were wounded in crossfire between security guards and a gang during a botched robbery on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, police said on Tuesday.
The armed gang had attempted to rob a pension pay point in Ezingolweni on Monday and opened fire on security guards, said spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Wiid. When the guards returned fire the gang fled. A car chase ensued and quick reaction by local police led to several arrests. "Police managed to apprehend six suspects and recover five of the vehicles." Wiid said the pensioners were not seriously injured and were recovering in hospital. Police were investigating whether the vehicles used in the crime were stolen. All six suspects were due to appear in court soon.
