Twenty-seven people were injured when they jumped from a moving train in Kenville, Durban, following a false fire alarm, ER24 emergency services said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Derrick Banks said the false alarm caused people to panic and leap from the moving train just before it arrived at the Kenville station on Tuesday afternoon.
Twenty-six people had sustained "minor to moderate injuries".
One person was seriously injured with a fractured leg and possible neck and back injuries.
All those injured were stabilised on scene before being taken to a provincial hospital in the greater Durban area.
Police and Transnet would investigate the incident, Banks said.
