Five manufacturers of baby formula in South Africa have assured the public that none of their products are made with any Chinese-sourced dairy products.

"I have personally spoken to each company, and have been assured that infant formula products available in South Africa from these five companies are perfectly safe and comply with local and international standards for infant formula," Infant Feeding Association of South Africa chairperson Mark Heaton said in a statement on Tuesday.

The five companies are Abbott Laboratories, Aspen Nutritionals, Nestle SA, Pharmaco Distribution and Tiger Brands.

Anyone wanting information on the products should contact the companies directly, he said.

Heaton said the IFA was "very concerned" about the melamine contamination of baby food products, including infant formulas, manufactured with Chinese-sourced dairy products.

Melamine appears to have been added to cow's milk in an attempt to boost the protein readings of diluted milk products and has reportedly been found in samples from 22 companies in China.
