More than 1000 members of the National Union of Moneworkers (Num) have gathered in Beyers Naude Square in Johannesburg ahead of a march on the offices of the Chamber of Mines, Johannesburg Metro Police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the march would take the protesters from the square to the Marshall Street and then back again.

He warned of disruptions to traffic in the area.

Num national spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the miners were protesting primarily against the lack of transparency in the industry as well as racism.

A memorandum would be handed over at the Chamber of Mines offices.

On Thursday, the the Chamber’s Acting Chief Executive, Dr Frans Barker, said that the members of the Chamber had made "significant progress in the transformation of the industry in line with voluntary, statutory and negotiated commitments."

Minnaar said that the march was reported to be peaceful.
