A man was arrested following a shooting at a bar and cocktail lounge in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, said Eastern Cape police said.

Spokesperson Inspector Dumile Gwavu said the 30-year-old man arrived at the lounge on Parliament street and wanted to go in without paying the required entrance fee.

"Security street refused to let him in. He went away but came back again at 3.45am, this time, requesting to see the owner," said Gwavu.

When the owner approached him, he drew a firearm and fired two shots at the owner and the security but missed.

They chased and took the gun away from him when they eventually caught him, said Gwavu.

Police were called and the man was arrested for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, he said.

He would appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday.
