At least six busy areas of Johannesburg were still without water on Thursday, two days after a pipe burst.

While water has been restored to some parts of Johannesburg which had to make do without water and sanitation for two days, areas like Yeoville and Berea were still affected due to technical problems, Johannesburg Water (JW) said in a statement on Thursday.

"JW started restoring supplies to the affected areas on Wednesday by opening the Yeoville reservoir outlet which was followed by the opening of the reservoir inlet.

However the supply line experienced technical problems and it was therefore necessary to attend to the problems and technicians had to shut down the supply to the reservoir," spokesperson Tebatso Matsimela said.

Although the technical problem was fixed early on Thursday morning, areas like Braamfontein, Kensington, Houghton, Joubert Park, Bellevue and Hillbrow are still without water.

"We are currently monitoring the situation from the control room and we anticipate having the situation back to normal by 5pm today (Thursday)," Matsimela said.

Until the situation is resolved, residents can obtain water from water tankers at Park Lane Clinic, at 204 Smith Street, Robert Street in Kensington, 43 Jolly Street in Bellevue East, as well as Highland North Street in Kensington.

"Johannesburg Water wishes to apologise to residents in the affected areas and undertake to have the service disruption resolved as speedily as possible," Matsimela said.

Water supply in these areas was cut on Tuesday due to a burst pipe.
