Two people, including a court clerk, have been charged for threatening a Durban magistrate, a prosecutor confirmed on Tuesday.
A prosecutor at the Durban Magistrate's Court, not wanting to be named, said the magistrate was presiding over an unlicensed firearms case in the Pinetown court and was intimidated a week before judgment in the case.
"The case is really sensitive because it involves a justice official. It was alleged that a clerk from another court had gone to his home residence and threatened him," she said.
The Mercury newspaper reported that the clerk, who knew the magistrate, was from the Hammarsdale court. It reports that the suspect, Christopher Sikhosana, had allegedly gone to his home and had suggested that if the accused in the case, Michael Ndlovu, was found guilty, that he should be fined and not sent to prison.
The clerk then made reference to another case where a prosecutor had disappeared and his body found months later.
Both Ndlovu and Sikhosana appeared at the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday and were charged with intimidation and defeating the ends of justice.
They will reappear in court on Wednesday.
