A KwaZulu-Natal taxi boss has secured an interdict against the police to stop them from killing him, the Mercury newspaper reported on Thursday.
Bongani Mkhize, chairperson of the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Association, alleges he is being sought by the police in connection with the murder of top policeman Superintendent Zethembe Chonco.
Chonco was killed in an ambush on the province's north coast in August.
Since then police have killed seven men, suspected of involvement in his death. In each of the cases, police claim that the suspects had either attempted to shoot them or escape from custody.
Mkhize said he believed he was next on a list and launched an urgent application in the Durban High Court this week.
He was granted an interim interdict, giving the national and provincial ministers of safety and security, the SAPS provincial commissioner and the head of the Organised Crime Unit until 5 November to file opposing papers.
The interdict restrains the police from "killing, injuring, threatening, harassing or in any way intimidating" Mkhize.
It also orders police to affect Mkhize's arrest and conduct his interrogation in the presence of his legal team. It further restrains police from removing Mkhize from holding cells without his legal team being present.
