The looming formation of a new political party by former ANC members posed no threat to the ANC, Deputy President Baleka Mbete said on Saturday.

She was addressing community members who had gathered at the Alexandra stadium in Johannesburg for the unveiling of six recently renamed streets.

"In recent weeks our movement has been under serve attack from forces undermining what people like Alfred Nzo, Vincent Tshabalala and Florence Moposho fought and died for. I don't believe they are a threat... they are just a political party like any other in the county and its their right to mobilise [for the up coming elections]," Mbete said.

As she stepped down from the podium, Gauteng housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane took over chanting "phanzi Shikota, phanzi" took exuberant chance from the crowd.

Shikota has been coined from former Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and former ANC chairperson Terror Lekota's names.

Mokenyane disputed claims that residents of Alex were not consulted during the street naming process.
