All political gatherings in South Africa would be monitored by police to ensure that they are peaceful, South African police services said on Monday.
National spokesperson Phuti Setati said crime combating units and public order police would be on the scene to ensure that all gatherings were held in accordance with the Gatherings Act. Any action that contravened the Act would be punishable by law. This included talk that fueled or promoted violence as well as physical violence that occurred at gatherings. "It's all about safety," Setati said. Setati said that police would not tolerate violence at such gatherings. "We urge people to cooperate with police. "Police are responsible for ensuring that public order is maintained at all costs. "Police will protect and secure the inhabitants of the republic and their property. "Police will uphold and enforce the law without taking sides," said Setati. Public order police officers were highly skilled and specially trained in crowd management. They would be on scene to ensure the safety of all involved, Setati said.
