Senior ANC member Phillip Dexter and former ANC Women's caucus parliamentary chairperson Kiki Rwexana quit the ANC on Tuesday.

They told reporters in Cape Town they would take part in the national convention called by Terror Lekota and Sam Shilowa in Gauteng this weekend.

Dexter recently resigned from the SA Communist Party.

Rwexana is also a former deputy secretary general of the ANC Women's League.

Western Cape members tear up cards

Executive ANC branch members from Ravensmead in Bellville have torn up their membership cards, the Cape Argus reported on Tuesday.

It said this happened at a rally on Monday night attended by about 400 ANC members ahead of this weekend's convention in Johannesburg by breakaway party members.

"We ask God to go with us to the national convention, and show us the path," said Lionel Louw, who worked in former Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool's office.

He said the country had come a long way, but there was an "emerging impatience" coming to the fore among people who still lived in poverty.

Ebrahim Sawant, former regional executive ANC member who resigned two weeks ago, accused the ANC of corruption, saying the party had lost its soul.

Painful decision

The main speaker Brian Heber, a senior ANC member who also resigned from the party two weeks ago, said his decision to quit was painful, but it had to be done. "They treated us like dogs. Now they want to make peace. How can you make peace with snakes?" he asked.

Hundreds of ANC members in the Western Cape have, resigned from the party in the past few days, the Argus reported.

The latest was ward chairwoman Beverly Malong, who said she expected about 300 members in her ward to follow suit.

Ward secretary Beryl Jansen and treasurer David Malong have also resigned.

"We are taking a stand and saying to the ANC, it's over. Our needs have never been met," said Malong.
