A 55-year-old Durban North home owner shot and wounded a robber he confronted in his garage, police said on Thursday.

Inspector Michael Read said the 26-year-old man walked into Willem Boshoff's Glenashley home at 7pm on Wednesday. The door was apparently open at the time.

"He took R420 from a drawer and then walked to the garage in the back yard."

Boshoff heard noises and went to investigate.

"Boshoff was assaulted by the suspect with a garden tool. The man then opened fire on the robber," said Read.

The suspect was shot twice in the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital under police guard. Once discharged, he faced a charge of attempted murder and theft.
