The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga on Thursday urged stricter control over fireworks and will submit legislation in this regard to the provincial legislature.
"Neither Halloween nor Guy Fawkes Day are recognised holidays in South Africa, but the festive antics and activities associated with these days have crept into every neighbourhood," spokesperson Clive Hatch said.
"If you are going to use Halloween or Guy Fawkes as an opportunity for a party, that is great, but please be considerate of the animal life around you.
"We don't need fireworks which frighten and hurt animals in order to have a good time. If you do plan to use fireworks as part of your festivities, at least have the decency to warn your neighbours," he said.
The DA would submit a fireworks policy as a private member's bill to the Mpumalanga Legislature which, when approved, would regulate the use of legal fireworks and eradicate illegal fireworks in the province.
The reasons for submitting this bill were to cut down on the extremely loud sounds, potential harm to animals and children and the pollution caused by firework debris.
The bill would not hamper pyrotechnical, light or sound, displays that were used at religious or cultural festivities, Hatch said.
